Fire and water brought together in a sculptural, 3D-printed retreat.
Like fire and water
Meeting the opposites—just like fire meets water—the robust concrete embraces the organic form.
Inspired by rocket stoves and coil water heating, the concept provides a cosy retreat. Integrating a fireplace as the water’s heat source gives the design additional intimacy and a degree of independence.
The technical realisation presented several challenges, including simultaneous heating, cooling, and internal water pressure. These were intended to be addressed by compartmentalising the internal structure to separate the different thermal and structural conditions, while a concrete mix with a higher ceramic content was proposed for the fire pit to improve its resistance to heat.
The design was awarded first place in the Interior category by both the expert jury and the public vote. The concept was not ultimately realised at full scale.
